The last time the 2 sides met in cup competition was in the QF of the 08/09 Scottish Cup when a 1-1 draw at East End Park was replayed till penalties at Pittodrie when the Dons were embarrassingly knocked out by the 1st division outfit. No replays in the League Cup however so the Dons will have to make sure they do the business away from home this time.
Craig Brown spoke to Radio Clyde at New Douglas Park where the draw took place to give his reaction: ‘Every team wants a home draw but we’ve been handed a difficult away one. Dunfermline are well managed. Lower league sides also give it that bit extra against the top sides and we saw that happen in the last round.
‘We’re not looking at the semi-final although we’re not taking that for granted. We want to get to the final in at least one of these cups. People have written off the league for everyone else but I’d also like to think people see us as one of the teams that can compete with Celtic.
‘Rangers have been drawn against my old team Motherwell and it will be interesting to see how Rangers fare against a team they would have played if they were in the SPL.’
The full draw for the League Cup 3rd round is as follows:
Celtic v Raith Rovers
Rangers v Motherwell
St Mirren v Hamilton Accies
Queen of the South v Dundee Utd
Hearts v Livingston
Dunfermline v Aberdeen
St Johnstone v Queen’s Park
Stenhousemuir v Inverness Caley Thistle
