I get a lot of people asking me why Aberdeen have two stars above their crest and I`m always all too delighted to tell them it`s because the club has won two European trophies, the only Scottish club ever to have done so.

It tends to shut them up as they try to comprehend the fact that Aberdeen have had more success in Europe than Rangers or Celtic.

Recently however and for some reason fans of both halves of the Old Firm are trying to dispute the magnitude of Aberdeen`s achievement by saying that the European Cup Winners Cup does not exist anymore.

Whilst that is true, I argue back that any trophy won by beating the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid is very much a significant trophy and was second only to the European Cup in prestige until UEFA bizarrely amalgamated it in a money making exercise.

trangely, Rangers fans are quick to berate the Dons victory in that trophy and play it down. I feel that they should be perhaps boasting about their own success in the tournament, a trophy they also won by beating Dynamo Moscow but were finalists three times making them the seventh highest ranked club in the European Cup Winners Cup history, an excellent achievement but somehow forgotten by all of Scottish football, especially it seems, by the club`s own fans.

Celtic rightly make a huge deal of the fact that they won the European Cup as the first British club to do so and with all Scottish players, only Real Madrid have emulated that feat of winning the tournament with eleven of their countrymen. What is forgotten but in no way should detract from their magnificent achievement is that the tournament was in it`s infancy and even the Lisbon Lions have admitted that they had no idea of how precious that win was to be.

Celtic were unlucky not to have added a second European Cup two seasons later when they lost in extra time to Feyenoord 2-1 in Milan`s San Siro but since then no Scottish club has come close or looks like doing so as the tournament has gathered weight and prestige and all of Scotland should be proud of what Celtic accomplished.

Aberdeen`s victory topped our poll and whilst that`s expected on an Aberdeen site it was quite close and all the club`s European successes gained a lot of votes which points towards many impartial voters voicing their honest opinions.

The Gothenburg victory in season 1983 was the last time Scotland had a European trophy winning side and that`s way too long. Although we`ve had two finalists for the UEFA Cup since then, 24 years in a football mad country with no European success is unthinkable but who can say it won`t be that length again before we do?

As Celtic so often make the point of saying, they won the European Cup win only Scots and Aberdeen did the same to win the Cup Winners Cup. Dundee United reached the UEFA Cup Final with a team full of Scotsmen.

Is history not telling us something?
