Aberdeen have announced that they will be marking the 25th anniversary of the European Cup Winners Cup triumph in style with a glamour benefit match for the players who defeated the mighty Real Madrid all those years ago at a drenched Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.

Leading the organisation is Kevin Davidson of K.W.A.D Sports Management Limited who, as well as securing a relevant big name opposition, will be putting a plan in place to make sure that the occasion will be exciting for everyone involved at the club.

evin said of his plans, ‘We have a number of exciting initiatives planned, which will be rolled out over the next few months but key to our plans is obviously a benefit match, which I am delighted to say the Club has agreed to host. While timings and opposition have still to be finalised, I can guarantee that it will be an occasion befitting such an auspicious landmark.’

evin continued, ‘We are in the process of appointing Event Managers to run the various events and are in discussions with potential sponsors to ensure the success of the 25 Year Celebrations. Details of both are expected to be announced shortly.

ittodrie Executive Director, Head of Operations Duncan Fraser said ‘Naturally we were delighted to agree to the staging of a benefit game in honour of the greatest team this club has seen in its 104 year history and, with the Club returning to the European arena after an absence of five seasons, the timing could not have been better.’

ohn Hewitt is the first Gothenburg great to speak out about the celebrations of which he will be a huge star amongst stars as he of course was the extra time goal scorer with a dramatic flying header. John is already looking forward to the quarter century party where he will be again back with the boys who helped him achieve one of Scotland`s greatest ever club victories.

n excited John said, ‘While I see several of the guys regularly, it’ll be fantastic to reunite the bulk of the squad again. It’s hard to believe that it really is almost twenty five years since we won the Cup Winners’ Cup and we saw back in 2003, during the AFC centenary celebrations, exactly what it meant, not just to the Club, but to the community as a whole.’

Twenty five years ago, it`s almost unbelievable but what an achievement.

With the Dons already having played Hamburg to mark the centenary celebrations, surely a match against Real Madrid must be the top choice in the benefit match next year in what would be a mouth-watering prospect. Failing that, Bayern Munich but who knows, perhaps we`ll have just have played them in the UEFA Cup final this time next year.

Got to dream the dream but have your say on who you`d like to see Aberdeen play to mark the occasion of winning the Cup Winners Cup on the Vital Aberdeen Forum.
