Finally some news on the ‘keeper front with West Brom`s John Bateman up on trial with the Dons.

Bateman played some part of the 6-0 win over Inverurie Locos after he replaced Greg Kelly near the end of the match and has been impressing the Aberdeen goalkeeping coaches to the extent that he is very close to being awarded a contract.

West Bromwich Albion were forced to unload the young goalie since they are fortunate enough to have the England Under 19 ‘keeper Luke Daniels also in their ranks which has resulted in Bateman going on trials around Britain looking for a new club and it was on one of these stints that has seen him arrive at Pittodrie.

He had an unsuccessful trial at Shrewsbury Town but was spotted there by Dons old boy Ryan Esson who recommended him to Jim Leighton via a phone call which has prompted the 18 year old arriving up north for his chance and he seems to be doing very well.

Jimmy Calderwood told the Evening Express how this new ‘keeper came to his attention and why he`s so interested in him, ‘He was in at Shrewsbury Town on trial after leaving West Brom but they decided not to take him on.

‘But Ryan was very impressed by him and he passed on a very positive report to Jim and we’re grateful for his help.

‘The kid travelled up to Aberdeen when we were away in Egypt and worked with one of the other goalie coaches.

‘John impressed in training and has looked good when he has trained with the first team as well.

‘We’ve only got one keeper who qualifies for the under-19s so we’re looking to strengthen in that department.

‘We’re seriously looking at him and we’ll decide at the end of the week what we are going to do.’

He`s not going to be the instant new number one that the fans crave but he seems to have a decent pedigree and you can never have too much quality or potential at least.

The fact that the Dons are spending so much effort securing the young stars of tomorrow can only bode well for the future of the club and with many of these guys getting their chance in the first team, many more highly regarded hopefuls will be willing to pledge their early years to Aberdeen FC.

Any West Brom fans out there able to give us some information on John Bateman?
