Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood has decided not to arrange a pre-season match with one of Europes all time greats Ajax and will instead take on the might of Inverurie Loco`s, Buckie Thistle and Cove Rangers upon their return from the prestigious Egypt tournament they will play in which runs from July 17th to the 29th.

jax currently feature world stars such as Edgar Davids, Jaap Stam, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder and Nicolae Mitae but are probably best known for producing the likes of legends Marco Van Basten, Johan Cruijff, Frank Rikjaard, the De Boer brothers and Dennis Bergkamp.

hilst it would be an obvious glamour match against the four times European Champions it`s been knocked out the park for financial reasons and Dons manager Jimmy Calderwood said: ‘It would be very difficult to cover the expense involved.

They still have a reputation worldwide and command certain financial guarantees.

But the game would be played at a time when many families are on holiday which would affect the gate.

It is a compliment to be asked to play such a great team and shows Aberdeen are still a name abroad.

However, our pre-season plans were already drawn up before Ajax contacted us and as a rule I am not in favour of playing friendlies at home.

It was different last year when we played Everton here, that was Russell Anderson’s testimonial.

I like to take the players abroad then meeting a couple of local sides on our return to repay them for all their help.

That is why we are going to Egypt to play in a tournament this summer.’

Ajax currently sit third in the Eredivise but are level on points with second place AZ Alkmaar and only two pints behind leaders PSV Eindhoven.
