It was hoped Aberdeen could get ‘an away goal’ and keep it tight in Croatia on Thursday night, well we certainly did that and more to record a stunning win over Rijeka in Europa League qualification.

Keeping ourselves in the second round qualifier first leg was the main aim but to come away with a three-nil win against a side without a defeat at home in a dozen European games was beyond our wildest dreams!

Having avoided an early worry or two, thanks to Liverpool loanee ‘keeper Danny Ward making some fine saves, we then made the breakthrough before half time thanks to Andrew Considine heading in from a corner.

Peter Pawlett added the second in the second half with Kenny McLean coming off the bench to grab the third to round off a memorable away night of European action for the Dons!

Wow, is about all I can say!

Having weathered that early storm, probably not the right choice of words in the 30 degree heat of Croatia despite the 9pm kick-off, with a ‘water break’ called on 24-minutes, we broke through.

It looked like two before the break when Pawlett had the ball in the net again but the flag was raised to rule this out but the second and third goals still came in the second half.

Much as Derek McInnes has warned us against we know this tie isn’t over yet but we’ll be incredibly disappointed should Rijeka go away from Pittodrie next week having overturned this first leg lead we hold….lets be honest about that!
