Not only has Ryan Jack recently extended his Aberdeen contract he’s also taken on the captaincy of the side too.

Russell Anderson barely featured last season due to injury, his decision to retire and take up a coaching role with the club left an opening that Derek McInnes had to fill and after much consideration he decided, as he told the BBC that the midfielder was the right option.

Players already at the club, and those signed, were captain material but McInnes feels the midfielder was the right option to step up.

‘I’ve no doubt he will deal with it.

‘We have a few candidates for the role. We want to see him take the responsibility, it’s more for his development.’

If McInnes feels that Jack’s the right man for the armband then I’ll back the decision, in fairness the manager hasn’t got much wrong since his appointment has he!

23-year-old Jack has led us for the first time in the pre-season friendly wins over Brechin and St Johnstone so far with his first time doing this in a competitive fixture coming in a couple of days against Shkendija in the first round of Europa League qualification.

Should we overcome the Macedonian side then we’ll move onto Croatian side Rijeka in round two.

McInnes is left in little doubt we’ve got a tough task ahead of us but does feel that we’re ready for the tie and have the players to progress and build on ‘last seasons exploits’ when we head to Skopje.

‘It’s a tough tie. Any game at this stage of the season, there’s a danger of not being game-ready. But, hopefully, we can play to our level and get through.

‘Individually we have good players that can win games for us. The short break means there is no real deterioration in general fitness.

‘We need to make sure we tighten up defensively, tighten up individually and find some sort of rhythm again.’

As long as we give it our all and can come back from our Europa League qualification bid, however far it takes us, having given it our all and having no regrets that’ll be good enough for me!

Wouldn’t it be the same for you?
