You would have thought I was relieved when watching the news on STV and hearing about a mass clearout this summer. But when the story came on and a picture of Barry Nicholson filled my TV screen I couldn’t have been less.
As Tyrone told us that Barry Nicholson would be leading the way and Steve Lovell and Derek Soutar would be following, my head sunk into my hands. What annoyed me most though was how Lovell’s departure was supposedly justified, ‘Lovell has only scored 24 goals since arriving from Dundee 3 years ago for a quarter of a million pounds’. Had it been up to me the script would have said ‘Lovell is statistically Aberdeen’s current best goalscorer even though half his appearances have been less than 10 minutes long, yet Jimmy Calderwood still prefers to play Darren Mackie who hasn’t scored in the league this season’.
But even more worrying is the fact that Lee Miller still hasn’t signed a new contract. The club’s top goalscorer this season and best/most intelligent striker at the club looks to be heading elsewhere in the summer and who does that leave us with? Darren Mackie and Chris Maguire. Mackie has scored twice this season, once in the UEFA Cup and once in the Scottish Cup and it’s just his luck that these goals have made the club nearly £2,000,000. Those seem to be the only reasons Calderwood has left to play him. And Chris Maguire, only 4 weeks or so ago, scored his first goal in a year and a half. He is also: too lightweight, has no skill, can’t shoot, is completely useless. His performance against Queen of the South proved it was only the goals that papered over the cracks of the fact he played crap in those games he scored.
Others we can guess are not being offered new contracts yet are:
Touzani (1 year left) – KEEP & PLAY – when he’s playing Severin looks a different player. Brilliant in defence and midfield but the latter his stronger position in my opinion. Knowing he’s there allows the rest of the midfield to push forward more.
Duff – UNDECIDED – he’s been improving every game but does not seem SPL standard at the moment.
Byrne – OUT – permanently injured.
Bus – UNDECIDED – I don’t know why all the anti-Bus stuff popped up really. To me he’s a good old fashioned defender that’s not afraid to stick his head where people don’t want to put their feet. Can also pass the ball out of defence. After his own goal at Caley not a single player, even supposed captain Severin didn’t tell him to forget about it and get on with it which I think was why he was subbed at half time.
Maybury – KEEP! – almost got freedom of Aberdeen after keeping McGeady at bay in the Scottish Cup but had a stinker against Queen of the South. Then again, who didn’t?
Aluko – KEEP IF POSSIBLE – not afraid to take on defenders and has the skill to do so. Also pops up with the odd wonder goal here and there. I think his best position is up front and not on the wing though, after his performance against Bayern. Looks like he’ll be playing in the Premiership next season however.
Walker – KEEP IF POSSIBLE & PLAY – Jimmy said the reason Walker’s not getting a game is because he can’t play alongside Severin. Simple solution = drop Severin. Walker is by far the superior player and is the England U19 captain for crying out loud!
On another note though, players I would have liked to have been out of contract this summer:
Severin – has been a hopeless captain and footballer this season.
Mackie – zero goals in a league campaign for a striker is the lowest of the lows.
Maguire – no skill, no strength, no shot on him. Wouldn’t look out of place at East Stirling.
McNamara – past it. Hasn’t got the legs anymore. No idea why he stormed down the tunnel when he was substituted on Saturday as he was the worst player on the park and I would have thought his own supporters cheering when he was taken off would have given him the message.
