Although Craig Brewster was only signed on a short term contract in December to add a bit of experience and cover to his squad, Jimmy Calderwood is thinking of offering the 40 year old a contract extension as his current one runs out in the summer.

Brewster has been out of contention to play since dislocating his shoulder against his former team mates Caley Thistle but should return to full training on Monday as the Pittodrie treatment room clears in time for the vital league run in.

Calderwood gave more than a hint that he fancies keeping Brewster for longer than his confirmed period. He said ‘Craig might be 40 but he’s certainly not finished yet and was very unlucky with the injury,’ said Calderwood.

‘I think he has got another season left in him but probably couldn’t play in every single match.

‘It’s up to him because he’ll know exactly how he is feeling.

‘I think he surprised a few people when he came on for us against Hibs on his Aberdeen debut earlier this year.

‘You can’t question his ability because he’s a class act.

‘I haven’t ruled out giving him another contract. It’s something that could happen although I’ll need to see what the finances allow us to do.’

Brewster did well in the matches against Hibs, setting up a goal and scoring another after coming on as sub to earn an ill-fated replay in the cup and will be a useful addition to the squad but Calderwood can also look forward to more of his first team being fit for selection.

A pleased Calderwood chirped: ‘Craig will return to full training on Monday along with Jamie Smith and Zander Diamond.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing them all back in action.

‘There’s a good chance that they could feature against Falkirk on Saturday week although that is still some way off.

‘But it’s a real boost that those three are nearing full fitness.

‘It’s important to have all your best players fit at a crucial point in the season.

‘Richie Byrne will also be back in full training a week on Monday and we have missed his presence this season.

‘And once Richie is back we’ll have a clean bill of health which would be a real bonus.’
