Dan Smith looks like being the odd man out in the fight for the left back slot as the manager now believes he`s too well covered in that area.

Ex-Sunderland player Smith played a few games last season in that position and never let anyone down but it`s clear that Jimmy prefers Richie Byrne and the man who made the spot his own last season, Ricky Foster.

Jimmy has also added the versatile duo of Lee Mair and Jackie McNamara to his squad and so, although he rates Smith, he is taking a valuable wage that could be paying for a new player or going towards keeping an existing one.

But Jimmy hasn`t shown Dan the door yet and insists that he still has time at the club to prove himself but with some English clubs interested, the latest is apparently Darlington, who come offering first team football, it`s likely he`ll go.

Gary Dempsey`s Yeovil have expressed an interest as well as Hartlepool and now Darlington so Calderwood has told the 20 year old that returning to England might be best for his career.

Jimmy said ‘I have told Dan he would face a tough fight to break into the team at left-back,’

‘Richard Foster had a phenomenal season while Richie Byrne is also on his way back.

‘Lee Mair can also play at left back so I’ve got strength in that area.

‘Something might happen with Dan during our pre-season campaign although we’ve yet to receive any approach.

‘I wouldn’t stand in his way if he got the chance to move on because he’s still young and would prefer to play regular football.’

Reckon Smith deserves another chance or is he now surplus to requirements?

Did you see him in any of the 3 games he played last season, if so, what did you think?
