Russell Anderson took the decision to announce his retirement from the professional game on Thursday having failed to significantly recover from the injury that’s sidelined him this season ending his long and distinguished career.

This career, which has seem him make over 400 appearances for us, sees him retire at the end of the season as one of our greatest ever defender, arguably players full stop.

His retirement was announced at the end of season awards evening with his quotes carried by the Official Website with him deciding that the time was right as difficult a decision as it was for him to make.

‘It was announced this evening that I am retiring from playing at the end of the current season but will be remaining at the club in a role behind the scenes. It’s obviously a huge wrench to stop playing, and a decision that has not been taken lightly, but the time just felt right.

‘I would like to thank the fans for their fabulous support during both of my spells at the Club, it really is hugely appreciated.’

This isn’t the end of the line for Anderson at Pittodrie though as he’ll be taking a behind the scenes role as he says with him looking forward to moving into this.

‘While nothing will ever beat playing, the fact I’m being given the opportunity to remain with the Dons is definitely the next best thing and I’m really looking forward to the next chapter of my career.’

Anderson, who will play again this season before it’s out, will be given a rousing reception for sure when this does happen.
