Aberdeen’s limited title hopes ended on Saturday when the win we needed, to take the title race forward, didn’t come at Dundee United with them beating us to confirm Celtic defended their title, which to take it this far might have been more than many excepted!

The solitary early goal from the hosts was enough to give them a one-nil win at Tannadice Park and end, which we had basically accepted anyway, our hopes of winning the Premiership this season.

After Rooney’s header had been saved by Cierzniak it was a Souttar pass, a fine pass at that, that picked out Muirhead (13) and he made no mistake in beating ‘keeper Brown to put Dundee United into an early lead.

Smith, who had come on for the injured Pawlett, saw an effort blocked before the break as we threatened an equaliser with Muirhead denied a second by Brown in the second half.

We continued to push for an equaliser but we couldn’t find it and Ciftci almost broke away to secure the points, only for a fine recovery challenge from Logan to deny him and when Taylor wasn’t able to get onto the end of a freekick that was that and we were beaten….

Ideally we would have wanted to, at least, take it to the meeting with Celtic but it wasn’t to be but all being well we’ll benefit from this experience and come back better and stronger for it.
