While I was browsing the various forums earlier today, I came across a serious question from an Aberdeen fan. What happens if Rangers are actually banned from Europe?

I was going to reply without a second’s thought with ‘they won’t’, but it did actually make me wonder. If someone from UEFA does come across even just one of the infinite shocking videos of Rangers fans in Manchester and they do ban the animals from Europe for even just a season, what will happen?

Will Motherwell get the Scotland’s 2nd Champions League spot? Or, more importantly, will 4th place qualify for the UEFA Cup? Because, a glance at the league table and you will see that 4th place is still mathematically possible for Aberdeen. Maybe not realistic, but possible.

Aberdeen sit in 6th on 50 points, with 4th placed Dundee United on 52 along with 5th placed Hibernian. Dundee United are host to Celtic on the final day of the season, while Hibs are away to Motherwell. Aberdeen meanwhile are at home to Rangers. Should Celtic overcome United, Hibs lose to Motherwell and the Dandies defeat Rangers, 4th place is ours.

However, UEFA has not made any noise in public yet about the actions of Rangers fans out and inside the stadium on Thursday night, where one Zenit fan was stabbed in the back. And, we still have to overcome the Gers on the last day of the season to finish 4th, so until then there’s not much point in saying anything.
