I’m sure Mark McGhee would be the first to admit the Dons pre-season results haven’t been brilliant so far with two defeats (Fraserburgh, Dunfermline), one draw (Tamworth) and two wins (Peterhead, Port Vale), and Aberdeen still have to play their toughest pre-season opponents, Brighton and Kaiserslautern, both away, before the season opener against Hamilton Accies.

However, it’s not about the result pre-season that will decide if McGhee has successfully re-built the Aberdeen squad and rightly believes the Dons support should start judging him and his team from August 14th.

McGhee told the Daily Record ‘The team is shaping up just fine and anyone who says differently doesn’t have a scooby doo.

‘I’m not the least bit interested in cohesive football at this stage of our preparations. Results and joined-up performances are an irrelevance to me. I feel very strongly that we’re forming a credible unit.

‘The public can start to test that theory when we face Hamilton on the first day of the SPL season’.
