Mark McGhee has confirmed that he is interested in making Stephen Hughes his first signing as Aberdeen manager. The midfielder, who played under McGhee at Motherwell is out oif contract and could move to Pittodrie for no fee.

McGhee has held talks with Hughes and his agent in an attempt to lure the player north. The Dons boss told the Evening Express that he was confident of landing Hughes despite the player having other offers on the table:

“I am fairly hopeful.

“So far, Stephen`s options that he has been given by his agent and clubs don`t really jump out at him.

“We have an advantage in that he knows us and enjoys working with us.

“So, we are in the swing door as they say.

McGhee hinted that he would like to have Hughes at Pittodrie before pre season begins on July 1st. With any luck, he will.
