Manager Derek McInnes has said he was delighted to see Aberdeen battle to three points against Motherwell having had a lengthy fixture break since the heavy loss to Celtic at the beginning of the month.

Goals from Taylor and Rooney in the second half clawed back a first half one goal deficit and gave us the three points, and speaking to the Official Site following the game, he explained.

‘I was really pleased with the three points because for a long period it looked as if it wasn’t going to go our way. I thought Motherwell were the better team in the first half, you could see how important the points are to them and they came here with a bit of confidence and they deserved all the credit in the first half. They played with purpose and they played with more aggression than us.’

The gaffer went on to say that we had prepared a system that we thought would counter our assumption that they would get the ball forward quickly to their forwards and that’s why we went three at the back, but unfortunately as the first half progressed it didn’t really help us.

‘There was a change in formation which helped turn it our way but to me it was more the change in our demeanour that was the biggest thing. The players showed exactly in the second half how important the three points were to us and they deserve a lot of credit for that. It could be the most important three points of the season for us you never know.’

It was almost chalk and cheese for McInnes when he compares the first half with the second half, as even 50/50 balls he felt we went for after the break with more desire and determination to win them and for him ‘In the second half we were stronger and won every challenge, every second ball and there was far more aggression, purpose and tempo to our play and the game went our way then and we deservedly got our lead.’

It does however serve as a remainder that you can’t be half with it in games, as despite the gap between us and Motherwell ‘every point is precious’ and if you aren’t on it you can be be punished as we were in the opening 45 minutes.

Moving forward though with ten games remaining he’s very happy with where we find ourselves in the table and our current run of form as we close the campaign out.

‘We are into a 10 game season and we just try and win as many of them as possible. From the last 15 league games we have won 12, drawn 2 and lost 1. That’s brilliant consistency and if we can get anything near that from our last ten games we will be pleased with our work this season.’
