Manager Derek McInnes has given his thoughts following the two one victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle that secured second spot for Aberdeen this season.

Speaking to the Official Site following the victory, McInnes went on to credit the belief and desire of the team as he felt they showed a real will to win following the half time break and falling behind so early after the restart.

‘The will to win was clear. The conditions played a huge part in the game as the wind really got up. In the first half we had to defend deeper and we could not really get out our own half. Inverness were excellent. You could see exactly why they are in a cup final and why they are third in the league.’

McInnes went on to say that we had to thank Scott Brown in the first half for keeping us in the game, as he pulled off two or three ‘top quality’ saves that in some way he thought were harsh on the opposition given their efforts as he knows we were very fortunate to go in at half time level at nil nil.

With the wind behind us in the second half, the gaffer went on to say that he felt Inverness would then sit back then as to not get caught out and that was the thinking by bringing Cammy Smith on.

‘We brought Cammy Smith on because he is great with his back to play. 20 or 30 yards from goal he is very good at causing problems. We got the ball into him and he showed great tenacity to win the free-kick for the first goal. Cammy played a very important part in the game going our way.’

Despite going behind, rather than focus on that negative, McInnes decided instead to focus on the positives of the fight back itself and the way the team dug in and kept going and believing.

‘I always thought there were goals in us today. What was pleasing was at 1-1 the reaction from the players. For me there was only us that would go on to win the game. We put pressure on them. From our experiences this season I could sense that we would go on and score, and so could the players. The crowd behind the goal got behind them and the goal was always to come.’

The gaffer quickly added after that though that he’s not saying we deserved to win the game because he knew Inverness had so many opportunities first half and had so much of the ball, they would feel we stole a point from them but in knowing that, the determination alone to win in those circumstances makes it a very ‘satisfying’ three points.

‘Consistency is made up of so many factors. There is the focus, there is the drive, there is concentration and also ability and determination. I think the determination we have shown in poor conditions has got the job done today.’

Ending his interview he went on to talk about securing second place in the table.

‘Finishing second is a significant moment. Aberdeen teams have found that hard to achieve. The club has had some bad years and some seasons they have not even been in the top six so to do it the players should be proud of their efforts and we should feel good about our club. There is still work to be done and 12 points to be earned.’
