Jimmy Calderwood will name Russell Anderson`s successor as Aberdeen captain in the next few days and he`s pleased that he doesn`t have an easy choice. Jimmy has named the five players he thinks are up to the job which each having their own selling points.

Scott Severin is streets ahead in our current poll to find your choice as new skipper as he fits the bill of being an authority on the pitch and someone with drive and passion who can lift the team on his own.

Severin was signed in 2004 and has never let the team down in any of the several positions he`s played and he can find an extra level when it`s most needed. Scott, along with Russ and Langfield were no question picks for the team last season and every SPL team would love to have a player of his ability in their ranks.

Besides Hearts?.. who let him go?..for free?.

But the madness as Tynecastle is now officially boring!

Seve might also be Jimmy`s favourite as he tries to entice the vice-captain to sign a longer deal and promoting him to the full job might go some way to doing just that.

He will face his most serious competition from new signing Jackie McNamara whose time captaining Celtic to many honours and European runs gives him an experience edge over every other player currently at the club. His experiences at the 1998 World Cup as well as the other Scotland matches he`s played in to earn his 33 caps all calculates up to being a vastly influential and important player that should be able to lead by example as there are not many even in the SPL who have achieved all that he has so far.

The other player`s Jimmy reckons man enough for the job are Chris Clark, Barry Nicholson and Michael Hart.

Clark was only one match away from being an ever present last season and whilst he`s quieter than some at the club, he motors through every game with 100% dedication to the cause whether in attack or defence and others cannot fail to be inspired by him.

Calderwood signed Barry Nicholson for the second time in 2005 and last season Dons fans perhaps finally saw why he was so keen to land the Dumfries born midfielder. Barry showed his best form since being at the club in the period after Christmas and stepped up when it really counted to score vital goals and take nerve-wracking penalties.

His passion for the club and cause was never more highlighted than when he scored the imperative last minute equaliser at Tynecastle which saw him run triumphantly towards the fans. Barry is becoming a real fans favourite but with only 9% of the vote so far on our poll, he`s still behind the big guns for the captains job in your opinion.

Michael Hart is obviously the club mouth and whether through bad interpretation, mislaid belief or just his honest opinion, Mikey isn`t going to shut up anytime soon. He likes a moan and a shout and with Calderwood stressing he wants more communication on the pitch, perhaps Hart is the man to show them how?

Dons fans will be informed of Jimmy`s decision in the next few days and you can still cast your choice on our Vital Aberdeen Poll until then but in the meantime, JC is not giving many clues as to who he sees wearing the armband next season.

He told Reds Online, ‘It’s great to have so many choices because we have so many natural leaders.

‘Russell was a fantastic captain who did a great job and will take some replacing.

‘But this is an opportunity for someone new to take over and prove their worth.

‘I’ll address the situation over the next few days before coming to a decision,’

‘Severin did well when he replaced Russell when he was either injured or suspended at different stages of last season.

‘But there are a few other candidates who are in contention for the role and more than capable of doing the job.

‘I’ll speak to my coaching staff and talk to the individuals concerned in the squad before taking things from there.

‘Clark, Hart, Nicholson, Severin and McNamara are the obvious replacements.

‘Things will depend on how those talks progress but they all have the right character and experience for the post.’
