For the past week or so, thousands of fans worldwide have been voting on the Northsound 1 and 2 websites for their Aberdeen Football Club player of the season. Not that big a surprise, Zander Diamond led the way with 35%, Lee Miller finished 2nd with 33% and Barry Nicholson placed 3rd with 24%.

Diamond evaluated his season, ‘I had just a year left on my contract at the start of the season so I knew I had to perform well. And with the big loss of Russell Anderson we all knew we had to step up and I think I’ve done that.’, he told RedTV.

When asked if consistency was key he said, ‘It may not be consistency but because a few seasons ago I was making mistakes, as a youngster, and this season I’ve been able to learn from that eradicate them.’

When told he was fast becoming a sort of cult figure and asked about his relationship with the red army, Diamond said a lot of it was about loyalty – ‘They showed loyalty to me when I was going through a bad spell and fans were coming up to me in the street and wishing well, so I thought signing the new contract was giving something back to them.’

And finally commenting on the game against Rangers on the last day of the season he said, ‘The Aberdeen-Rangers games are really special and with Rangers having something to play for both sets of fans will turn out in force. Our players will be giving 100% and hopefully if we get the win against Rangers the fans will have something to cheer about.’
