Looking at other SPL Vital sites, people must think I’m mad. While I’m sitting here with Aberdeen 6 points behind 3rd with 3 games to go still not giving up hope, Vital Dundee United’s main story quotes Craig Levein saying ‘They can also still have a big say in the European and league race’. And with United only one point behind 3rd, their poll says Can United still finish 3rd?

Am I being too optimistic?

Vital Quotes:

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood still shares at least some hope, ‘With Motherwell and Dundee United drawing at Fir Park, there is still that little bit of hope as far as a third place finish is concerned. Obviously we are very much the outsiders and we would need assistance elsewhere but another win this weekend would take us that little bit closer to the teams above us. Irrespective of where we finish though, we want to end the campaign with a bit of style.’, he told the club website.

Captain Scott Severin also told the club website to never say never, ‘Thirteen points out of the last eighteen means that third place is not completely out of sight yet. It has been such a crazy season that we’ve learned never to say never. We know results elsewhere will need to go in our favour and that above all else, we will need to win our last three games of the season. That’s a big ask but, it’s not impossible, especially with two of the games here at Pittodrie and especially if we can find three more performances like the ones against Celtic and Hibs.’

Aberdeen Team News:

Darren Mackie is supposed to be out injured but their are rumours he is missing the game to go to his sister’s wedding. Alan Maybury looks to be out for the rest of the season with suspected fractured ribs. Zander Diamond is out through suspension after picking up numerous yellow cards. And as always Byrne, Smith and Mair all miss out through injury. Late news just in that Sone Aluko is still missing through injury after being treated all week.

Player to watch: Lee Miller

The Dons striker joined Aberdeen from United at the start of the 2006/2007 season. United paid a quarter of a million pounds for him from Bristol City after he shone in the SPL during a loan spell at Hearts. However, after an unsuccessful spell at Tannadice United gave him to Aberdeen for nothing only a year later. This year he’s Aberdeen’s top goalscorer with 12 goals in all competitions and is 8th top goalscorer in the SPL this season. He got himself a caution from the police after showing his backside to the United fans at Pittodrie at half time in a game last season.

Dundee United Team News:

Midfielder Danny Swanson is back after a three game ban and Willo Flood returns after a thigh injury. United have a fully fit squad.

Player to watch: Lukasz Zaluska

The goalkeeper almost caused a riot at the CIS Cup semi-final at Tynecastle earlier in the season. Zaluska wound up the Aberdeen fans after each United goal causing hundreds of objects to reign down on him preceding many arrests by the police. Aberdeen were not fined after an investigation found Zaluska did provoke the red army. It will be very interesting to see how he deals with the home crowd.

Match Prediction:

Billy Dodds told BBC Sport, ‘A tight game but I fancy United to sneak it. 2-1 United.’

Luckily for us Billy Dodds is always wrong and the last time he predicted a tight game for us we won 4-3 away to Inverness with a 94th minute winner.

My prediction: 4-1 Aberdeen. CIS Cup revenge.
