Aberdeen were for the 2nd time in 4 weeks cheated by the officials. Barry Nicholson’s effort in the 2nd half was not given, with the ball nearly touching the net.

In the opening stages Motherwell’s Hughes found a yard or two of space next to the corner flag who crossed it to Porter whose header went just over the bar. In the 33rd minute, Bus needlessly gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box and Hammell’s curling shot was tipped out for a corner even though the ball was heading over the bar. It was all Motherwell throughout the rest of the half but both sets of players did not seem to be at their best. Stuart Duff had a chance in the final minutes of the first half but couldn’t find the target.

Half-time: Motherwell 0-0 Aberdeen

On the hour mark Hughes found himself in a ridiculous amount of space on the right. He turned and chipped it in and the ball eventually broke to Darren Smith. His first effort came back to him and with bodies lying everywhere he toe poked it into the almost empty net to give Motherwell the lead. However, only 5 minutes later Aberdeen pulled it level. Miller chested it down for Mackie, who swung the ball in for the unmarked Aluko, who brilliantly volleyed his shot into the far right corner of the net. And just a few minutes later Aberdeen thought they took the lead. A long throw from Severin was headed on by Duff to Nicholson at the far post. His effort was about a yard and a half over the line but scooped out by Smith and Nicholson wheeled away celebrating. However, neither official gave the goal. And 7 minutes later that proved costly for the Dons. Foster lazily and carelessly lost possession and Motherwell’s text book counter attack was finished by Chris Porter. In injury time though, the Dons got a free-kick right on the edge of the box. Chris Maguire’s effort rattled the crossbar, bounced off a Motherwell player and typically landed right in the arms of Smith.

Player Ratings

Jamie Langfield – 6
Didn’t have much to do but was solid.

Maybury – 5
Poor performance as far as his standards go.

Touzani – 7
As usual, solid and good going forward.

Considine – 6
Only played the first 10 minutes. Didn’t make a mistake in that time though.

Foster – 2
Poor deliveries and played a part in both Motherwell goals.

Duff – 6
Pretty good again but didn’t shine.

Nicholson – 8
Brilliant as per and scored the winner as far as I’m concerned.

Walker – 8
Just incredible why Jimmy doesn’t play him and Aluko. The two linked up to shred Bayern to pieces at Pittodrie.

Severin – 5
He’s just not as good as those also on offer.

Mackie – 5
Same as Severin.

Miller – 8
He’s too intelligent for the rest of our team.

Aluko – 10
One man’s gold, another man’s peanuts or whatever the saying is. Class again and changed the whole game when he came on.

Maguire – 6
Terribly unlucky with last minute free-kick but made no impact when he came on.

Sone Aluko

Manager Rating
Manager my left buttcheek. Starting Mackie ahead of Lovell, replacing Mackie with Maguire, replacing Walker, not starting Aluko, starting Severin, not bringing on Lovell…

Jimmy Calderwood
‘When I first saw the incident I thought the keeper had made a great save, but when the players came off they were raging. They said the ball was well over the line and speaking to the TV guys they appear to back this up. We would have been 2-1 up and could have been putting a lot of pressure on the teams around us. That’s two decisions in four weeks that have cost us a potential four points and it’s cost us a European spot.’ – RedWeb

Barry Nicholson
‘At the time I thought it was in. After that you start to have doubts but at the time I thought it was in. The keeper has clawed it out but I thought it was in by a wee bit. The television pictures are showing that it was in so it is disappointing another refereeing decision probably swung the game. The goal should have stood as the whole ball was over the line. It would have given us a 2-1 lead which would have changed the course of the game.’ – RedWeb

Sone Aluko
‘That was definitely my best goal for Aberdeen.’

‘I thought it (Barry Nicholson’s effort) had gone in as well. The keeper seemed to claw it out the net and I thought it had gone over the line but no, the referee didn’t give it. Maguire hitting the cross bar after that, we just knew it wasn’t our day.’ – RedTV
