Jimmy Calderwood has embraced the addition of Richie Byrne into the squad as he would a long lost son. He has grieved about Byrne`s absence since his last appearance on the 24th of September, against Hearts coincidently, and is desperate to get him back in the team

Calderwood said: ‘It is like having a new player back in the side, as Richie has hardly played this season. Richard Foster has been a revelation at full back, but it is brilliant to have Richie back.

‘There was never any doubt Richie would come back, but I did worry he was out for the rest of the season. It has been a delicate approach to getting him fit again, but the physios have done a terrific job. He will train with the squad this week and we will see how he is doing on Saturday.’

Calderwood reckons that no player in the SPL will be relishing Byrne`s return; including his team mates.

He said: ‘Richie was back in training today and he hasn’t kicked anybody yet, so it was a good day. He brings strength, a will to win and a physical presence.

‘He is the sort of player who stands on your toes, hits your thigh and gives you a dead leg – all by accident. The boys are panicking at training again, never mind opposition players.

‘He had a big fright with the injury and there has been a few setbacks. He has been back training for weeks, but every time he stepped it up, he felt something in his thigh and we sent him for scans to make sure he had not injured himself again.

‘He is like Steve Lovell in that he has the thighs of a sprinter and the slightest thing can knock them for six, but he is fit and raring to go again.’

Jimmy fielded his other three long term injury victims on Saturday, each having a varied length of time to play after all came on as sub at different times and he`s very impressed with their progress.

He said: ‘Zander Diamond looked magnificent when he came on and he was heading the ball 40 yards clear to set up attacks. Craig Brewster showed his ability to keep hold of the ball, too, and with Jamie Smith back, it has been an important weekend for us.’
