If anyone deserves the international call up that he’s got then it’s Adam Rooney with our top goalscoring Player of the Year striker called into the Republic of Ireland squad for games this summer.

Technically Rooney isn’t in line to win his first cap yet as he’s only in the initial 33-man provisional squad for the friendly with England and Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland in June but all being well he’ll make the final cut.

Speaking in his press conference, following the squad announcement, Martin O’Neil said that he deserved this call up with it reward for the season he’s had at Pittodrie.

‘We’ve had Adam watched quite regularly over the season.

‘Roy (Keane) went up to watch him quite some time ago and although he didn’t think that was his best game, he did believe he had something to offer.

‘Its reward for the season he’s had at Aberdeen similar to Judge at Brentford.

O’Neill feels that this move to select him will ‘be a boost’ to him but warned the step up from club to international level isn’t an easy one to make but he doesn’t see why he can’t do this and if he gets the chance I wouldn’t be betting against him.
