Russell Anderson has been fantastic this year for Aberdeen and must be an absolute priority for Jimmy Calderwood to get re-signed.

He’s won our fans poll by a landslide and will continue to pick up awards for his efforts this season.

There have been a few Dons players that have had a good season and guys like Michael Hart, Ricky Foster, Scott Severin, Darren Mackie and Barry Nicholson certainly fall into that category but none have come even close to matching Russell’s standards of consistency and Man of the Match performances.

Jimmy Calderwood knows the value of his star centre half and Russell’s worth is never shown more than when he is not playing as the Dons concede goals galore. A fact that must be giving his manager nightmares ahead of the visit to Tynecastle on Sunday as Russell is suspended.

With plenty offers expected for big Russ, Jimmy’s hardest task this summer may be persuading Anderson to stay longer than his existing contract and Calderwood believes his team mates can be a huge part in Russell securing a new deal.

Calderwood will hope that the team he puts out on Sunday can do enough to gain qualification for Europe as Calderwood believes that could be the factor in keeping his captain at Pittodrie.

Jimmy said ‘The chance to lead his hometown club in Europe next season would be a big carrot for Russell.

‘It would certainly make the job of trying to persuade Russell to stay at Pittodrie a lot easier if someone does come in for him.’

Russell won the poll with 53% and the fact that statistic is so high could be the answer to our next poll which is ‘Why have Pittodrie Attendances Dropped This Season’.

Perhaps, whilst the fans appreciate very much Russell’s abilities and contribution, they would like their best player to be in offence?
