Although Dundee United defeated the Dons on Saturday, it is the Terrors who are apparently looking at one of our strikers with the name of Steve Lovell being quoted to the extent that Jimmy Calderwood has had to come out and tell the press that there is no truth in the Englishman leaving the club.

Lovell is normally used as a seriously effective super sub as he leaves the bench to come on and net a vital goal which happened so often last season and it looked like he was about to again take centre stage and the limelight on Saturday when he lined up his shot from the 18 yard box only to screw his effort wide with Grzegorz Szamotulski stranded.

His past goalscoring record in Scotland with Aberdeen and Dundee means that he will often be linked with a move away but at still only 26, his manager still thinks he has much to offer the Dons and he has never been more impressed by the striker`s form and commitment than in this year`s pre-season.

A swap deal was been mentioned involving United`s Aberdonian midfielder Stuart Duff but the boss has been quick to squash that particular angle as he told Reds Online, ‘It’s nonsense to even suggest we would be interested in exchanging Steve Lovell for Stuart Duff,’ said Calderwood.

‘I don’t mean anything against Stuart because he is a very good player.

‘I even tried to sign Stuart a wee while ago but not involving a swap. He’s a versatile lad but signing Lee Mair has ruled out any hope of that happening.’

On Steve himself, Jimmy took time to clarify the situation to the point where he made it very clear about Lovell`s future.

‘Steve is a very dangerous striker and is a major part of our plans.

‘He’s as fit as he has been in three years since he’s been at the club.

‘Steve has at the best pre-season since he signed for Aberdeen.

‘He is desperate to break into the team and was disappointed not to start but he’s shown a great attitude in training despite being left on the bench against Dundee United.

‘But he’s going nowhere.’

So that`s that then but would you have liked to have seen that swap deal happen?
