Just back in from today’s game.

A bit of a curate’s egg. Decent in places but ultimately ruined by a load of changes in the last 15 minutes that left us shapeless and unable to get the ball.

Started off with a pretty strong team, but to counter that Calderwood rolled that tactical tombola and we went to 3-5-2 after about 15 minutes…3 central defenders in Mair, Severin and Considine, and with Foster and Mulgrew doing a hell of a work up and down the flanks.

Despite all that we looked vulnerable almost every time Zwolle broke forward and were completely unable to deal with any high balls into the box. Langfield made a few good saves and we were lucky not to go in at half-time 3-0 down, despite Mackie having a goal disallowed for offside.

2nd half things got a bit better and despite hardly threatening we looked to have tightened up at the back. Out of nowhere McDonald ran onto a flick on and whacked it past the kepper.

After that it looked like the game was dying a death until Calderwood made about 5 substitutions and the flow of the game changed. Zwolle equalised with a free-kick that went straight through the wall, then snatched the winner with about 3 minutes left as our defence went missing.

Pass marks to Langfield, Kerr, Jamie Smith and the excellent Gary McDonald. He really put in a very good shift and was our best player by a mile…if he keeps this up he’ll be a real find this season.

Hard to know what to make of today. It was bloody hot…over 30 degrees all afternoon. So hot in fact that the game was halted twice so everybody could take on water.

ut even at that there were long periods where we looked sluggish, and apart from the goal the Zwolle keeper never had to make a save all day.

Things could get worse on Wednesday night, Vitesse are 3 levels above Zwolle (ability wise).
