Defender Zander Diamond will miss Aberdeen;s five remaining games this season after it was today confirmed he would require surgery on an ankle injury aggravated at the weekend against Celtic. Manager Jimmy Calderwood confirmed the news:

‘It`s the same ankle problem that has been bothering Zander for some time.

“That`s the third or fourth time that it has forced him to stop playing, so we need to finally get to the bottom of the problem.

“It`s likely Zander will need surgery, which is a massive blow to him and the club.

“But we hope that by sorting things out now it will make sure Zander is fit for the start of next season.”

Diamond will undoubtedly be a huge miss for the dons as they look to secure european football next year with their five remaining SPL fixtures.

Aberdeen’s woes were furthered when it was today revealed the ever-injured Jamie Smith will likely miss the rest of the season along with Derek Young. Jimmy Calderwood told the Evening Express:

“It looks as if it could be three or four weeks for the other two, which is a bit of a nightmare at this stage of the season.

“I feel particularly sorry for Jamie because he has been working hard after spending a fair bit of the campaign on the sidelines already.

“The only good thing is that they appear to have strained as opposed to torn their hamstrings, so the injuries aren`t serious.
